SURAT: Two persons of whom one is a minor were arrested for trying to break the ATM of State Bank of India (SBI) in Godadara to steal money.
During preliminary interrogation, the duo told police that they badly needed Rs 10 lakh as they were under heavy debt due to their father’s illness.
Officials of Limbayat police station said that Prakash Dhamaiya, a resident of Sainagar Society near Aspas Temple in Godadara along with the minor boy tried to break the ATM early on Tuesday morning. They had carried axe, plough and hammer with them to break the machine .
The duo broke the ATM’s front portion and damaged the CCTV camera. They had managed to pull down the shutter of the ATM booth as there was no security person manning the spot. However, a police patrolling vehicle passed from there and stopped to check. They saw the duo trying to break the ATM and nabbed them.
Interrogation revealed that they hailed from a farmer’s family and owned a field on the city’s outskirt. Prakash’s father was suffering from tuberculosis and some other illnesses. He had incurred expenses of nearly Rs 10 lakh for the treatment which he had borrowed from some relatives, which he had to repay.
Police sources said that the duo saw some videos on Youtube and got the idea of breaking into an ATM.
“ Had the police van reached 20-30 minutes late, the duo would have managed to break open the ATM and steal cash. They don’t have any criminal record,” said police.
