A nine-year-old girl has made a terrifying escape after she was confronted by a man who grabbed the handlebars of her bike as she made her way to school. 

The child was riding to class in Mernda, Melbourne's north-east, on Wednesday when the man stopped her and convinced her to walk alongside him.

When the girl ran away, the man dropped the bike and fled the scene on foot.

Police want to speak with anyone who may have witnessed the incident or has dashcam footage shot in the area at about 8.30am.  

'Detectives are seeking footage that shows a male wearing a blue coat or jacket especially in Skeeter, Sumner and Mernda Village drives,' police said in a statement. 

'Investigators are also releasing CCTV footage of a male who they believe may be able to assist with their enquiries.'
