Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) officers on Wednesday intercepted three passengers at the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport and prevented them from carrying abroad large amounts of allegedly illegally-obtained foreign currency.

The DRI’s Hyderabad Zonal United said the trio planned to travel to Hong Kong by a Thai Airways flight with USD 1.38 lakh.

Acting on a tip-off, officials searched their check-in luggage and found the cash. During interrogation, they confessed to have obtained the currency from dealers to smuggle it out of the country. The trio was arrested.
