'If they need 8+ cops for a school formal then the police force is in desperate need of a herd thinning and standards raising,' one commentor wrote.

Other users saw the incident as a 'joke' and a 'waste of tax payer money'.

A number of comments implied the police were overly suspicious of young teenagers.

'Nice, destroy their chance of getting a job before they're old enough to get one. Good thinking,' another wrote.

One joked saying the formal was attended by notorious Colombian drug dealer Pablo Escobar.

A New South Wales Police spokesperson said police supervision in large numbers was not standard practice.

A spokesperson from Goulburn Police Station told Daily Mail Australia there were no criminal acts at the scene.

'Goulburn police officers were simply carrying out a routine operation,' the spokesperson said.
