Cyclone Gaja to make landfall today; Puducherry & Tamil Nadu put on high alert

CHENNAI: As cyclone Gaja is set to make landfall between Pamban and Cuddalore on Thursday, Tamil Nadu and Puducherry governments have put in place several contingency measures.
Authorities have declared a holiday for all educational institutions in Nagapattinam, Tiruvarur, Thanjavur and Cuddalore districts and Puducherry on Thursday, and examinations have been postponed.
People can contact control rooms toll-free at 1070, 1077 or 1031 for assistance.
Telecom majors have stocked fuel for five days to operate generators for ensuring uninterrupted mobile network connection during power outages. Mobile towers would be operated in Cuddalore and Nagapattinam districts. Bulk SMS facility will be used to send out weather alerts from emergency control room.
At least 212 low-lying areas have been identified across coastal areas and 249 shelters have been readied. A total of 135 special teams comprising 633 officials have also been deployed
