WhatsApp is testing the ‘Share contact via QR Code’ feature, according to WABetaInfo. Through this, users will be able to share their contact information in an encrypted form, and eases the process of saving contacts. The feature is similar to what Instagram offers. This change is expected to be rolled out along with an improved ‘Add Contact’ UI, which will be available for both Android and iOS.

The Share contact via QR Code feature  will allow WhatsApp users to generate a QR code with their contact details. Within the feature, users can choose to revoke a QR code, or generate a new one at any point in time.

This feature is expected to benefit businesses, so that it can increase public access. On the other hand, if one has to add a new contact through WhatsApp, the feature will allow them to scan for a QR code. The WABetaInfo report claims that there is no limit to the number of times that a user can revoke the QR code.

On the updated ‘Add Contact’ option, WhatsApp users will soon be able to select the country of a new contact’s phone number, and the country code will be inserted by WhatsApp. After typing the number, this feature will also show a pop-up message to indicate whether the number entered is on WhatsApp or not.

Both of these features are still under development, so one would have to wait before these features are rolled out.

Android smartphone owners should note that WhatsApp will soon delete chats that have not been backed onto Google Drive by October 30. The feature has been available in August, and ensures that the chats will not eat into the storage limit of Google Drive itself.
