KOLKATA: The Baguiati police has arrested a person identified as Raju Singh for allegedly demanding protection money from a Teghoria-based businessman and vandalizing an yet-to-be-opened coffee shop.

“On earlier occasions, the victim was compelled to pay. On November 6, Singh demanded Rs 5 lakh from Sinha, a demand he had placed earlier. Sinha had then told Singh that he had just rented a Café Coffee Day outlet and was in a position to pay Rs 20,000 only. Later, on Kali Puja day, Singh and his men vandalised the shop after which, the victim lodged a complaint on Tuesday,” said a police officer.

Biddhannagar Commissionarate officers said the accused was nabbed on Tuesday itself, hours after the complaint was lodged. Singh has been charged under IPC sections 386 (extortion by putting a person in fear of death or grievous hurt), 427 (mischief), 120B (criminal conspiracy) along with common intention. The accused has also been charged under 25 (i) (a) of the Arms Act.

“During questioning, the accused claimed he had not acted on his own but was instructed by others. We are trying to ascertain the identity of the people he was in touch with,” claimed a police officer.

Sinha said he was happy with the police action. “I reported the entire incident to them. I am happy the entire administration acted swiftly and arrested the accused,” he said.

The accused is believed to be a close aide of a local councillor from the Airport division. Bidhannagar mayor Sabyasachi Dutta, however, said that political affinity would not matter in such cases of extortion.
