The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has forwarded a complaint of alleged human rights violation against Madurai Kamaraj University Assistant Professor, V. Murugan, an accused in the attempted trafficking of college girls, to the State Human Rights Commission for disposal.
Murugan’s wife, M. Suja had sent a complaint in September stating that her husband had been falsely implicated and jailed in the case pertaining to a private college assistant professor, Nirmala Devi, accused of luring girl students to provide sexual favours for higher officials of Madurai Kamaraj University.
“While in the audio tape, Nirmala Devi has mentioned that the girls were only for “higher officials”, it does not apply to my husband, who is only an Assistant Professor,” she said in her complaint.
The investigating agency, Crime Branch-Criminal Investigation Department had got him signed some confessional statements from Murugan under threat, she alleged.
The call detail record of her husband’s mobile phone showed that he had never made any outgoing call to Nirmala Devi and all incoming calls from her had been brief and only on professional matters, she claimed.
Bail denied for long
“My husband, who is innocent, has been imprisoned and had not been allowed to get bail,” she claimed.
She alleged that her husband was being victimised only because he belonged to Scheduled Caste community. He had been in prison for more than 124 days (till September) without bail, Ms .Suja said adding that it was violation of basic human rights that has rendered Murugan in severe mental depression.
The NHRC held that the grievances raised in the complaint was a subject of the State. “Let the complaints be transferred to the State Human Rights Commission under Section 13 (6) of the Protection of Human Rights Act, 1993, for disposal in accordance with provision of the Act,” it said.
Governor wrongly accused
Nirmala Devi’s advocate, Mahalingam, on Thursday told reporters that news reports in a section of media on reported confession of Nirmala Devi was false. He said certain reports blaming Tamil Nadu Governor in the case was wrong. He said that Nirmala Devi was in favour of filing defamatory cases against the media houses for publishing false information, he added.
Meanwhile, the Fast Track Mahila Court, hearing the case, on Thursday adjourned the hearing to November 20. Murugan’s lawyer argued that the High Court’s observation against the accused, based on which the case was being heard, has been challenged in the Supreme Court.
