The Australian summer season is almost underway with Christmas parties, sun-soaked holidays and outdoor festivals filling up calendars nationwide.

But as well as injecting a heavy dose of social events, warmer weather Down Under calls for a different approach to beauty.

To help us keep up to speed with the latest trends, senior MAC makeup artist Nicole Thompson appeared on The Morning Show to share her predictions and how to wear them this long, hot summer.

According to Ms Thompson, the key to a sought-after summer glow and flawless finish begins with a good primer.

'A lot of people say they don't have time to prime their skin, but there are so many options on the market for different skin types these days and it really only takes a second,' she said.

'If you feel you can't get into a store to find the best product for you, the fastest and most effective way to prep skin is with a spray.'

THE HOTTEST SUMMER MAKEUP TRENDS ACCORDING TO MAC

* Dewy, natural looking skin

* Pink eye shadow

* Glitter and metallic pigments

* Bright, wide-eyes which can be enhanced using nude kohl pencil

To start and finish a summery look, Ms Thompson swears by a setting spray like Mac Fix Plus, which stops complexions looking too powdery while also hydrating skin.

'It prevents caking - the key to dewy skin!' she said.

When it comes to eyes, those in the know from the beauty community are using colours traditionally reserved for the lips - like strong hued pinks.

'Pink is a big trend for the eyes - people aren't afraid to use colour anymore,' she said.

'Don't be afraid to use a liquid lipstick as eye shadow - they are super easy to blend and acts as a long wear dual product!'.

For Christmas parties, glitter is all in but if all out sparkles seems a bit too much for your taste, Ms Thompson recommends a metallic pigmented shadow.

Ms Thompson also shared the trick to banishing tired looking eyes, an increasingly popular request since Meghan Markle's bright-eyed, bag-free look from her Royal Tour of Australia.

'You need to take a nude kohl pencil and blend it into the inner corners and waterline along the lower rim of the eye.

'Blend it all the way around for that bright, wide-eyed effect.'
