Astronomy Olympiad: Mangaluru boy bags silver in Beijing

MANGALURU: City lad Prathyush S Poduval has made the country proud by bagging a silver medal in the International Olympiad in Astronomy and Astrophysics (IOAA- 2018), held in Beijing, China.

Pratyush is a former student of the Centre for Advanced Learning (CFAL), and is one among five students who participated from India, and the only person from south India. There were 214 students competing, including from countries which are highly advanced in astrophysics, astronomy and space sciences, such as USA, Russia and China. Around 40 countries participated in the olympiad. Overall, India bagged 3 silver and 2 bronze medals.


Prathyush is one among five students who participated from India, and the only person from south India. He is the son of Sunitha P Poduval and Prasanth S Poduval, an employee at MRPL.


Severine Rosario, principal of CFAL, Mangaluru, said on Tuesday that Prathyush is a motivated student who looks for challenges beyond the school curriculum. He is a self-directed learner and his interests include astronomy, physics and mathematics. His teachers at CFAL have mentored him over the years in solving physics and mathematical puzzles, and in developing deep love for the subjects.


Prathyush is presently pursuing his studies at the Indian Institute Of Science, Bengaluru. He was the Karnataka state topper in KVPY 2017-18 and is on a KVPY scholarship. In NSEP 2017(1st stage of International Physics Olympiad), Prathyush secured the first rank from Karnataka state.
