FOXBORO – The Patriots are trying to boost their special teams unit with a familiar face.

On Wednesday, the Patriots signed linebacker Ramon Humber, according to the Boston Herald. The 10-year veteran was recently released by the Buffalo Bills. Humber replaces special teamer/linebacker Nicholas Grigsby, who was released on Tuesday.

Humber was with the Patriots during the 2016 offseason, but was released near cut-down day and landed with Buffalo. He's coming off the best season of his career. Last year, the linebacker made a career-high 89 tackles to go with a sack, deflection and forced fumble.

A career-special teams ace, Humber was playing less on defense this season with the Bulls. This year, he played 60 defensive snaps to 171 snaps on special teams. Humber has nine total tackles, but four of those were special teams tackles, which was tied most on the Bills.  At the moment, four special teams tackles would tie Humber for second most on the Patriots.

This season, the Patriots have been among the NFL's worst teams when it comes to covering kickoff returns and punt returns. The Patriots rank 31 out of 32 teams in kickoff return yards allowed (714). They rank fifth worst (28th overall) in punt return yards allowed (222).
