PSL fixtures moved to accommodate CAF

2018-11-14 16:29

Cape Town - The Premier Soccer League (PSL) has been forced to reschedule a number of league fixtures as a result of a change of structure by the Confederation of African Football (CAF).

Four PSL clubs will be competing in the two CAF competitions, with Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates featuring in the Champions League while Kaizer Chiefs and Free State Stars are taking part in the Confederation Cup.

Following the draw, the PSL's Selwyn van Wyk said that Sundowns especially would be affected as they didn't know the former Champions League winners would start this season's competition in the preliminary round.

Sundowns were drawn to play Leones Vegatarianos on the same weekend as a Premiership clash with Black Leopards on November 28, while there is also a clash with their second tie.

“CAF changed their structure all of a sudden, so a number of teams that were seeded in the past were no longer seeded and have to play in the preliminary round," Van Wyk told the SowetanLIVE website.

“We will have to find them a new date for those two games against Leopards and Maritzburg.

“As you can see, Chiefs, Pirates and Stars have currently played more games in the league unlike Sundowns.

“This was done with CAF competition in mind, only to find that Sundowns too have to play in the preliminary stage.”
