New Delhi: A traffic cop is going to be rewarded by Delhi Police for displaying exemplary courage in nabbing a criminal from Nuh in Haryana who was fleeing after mowing down another policeman with his mini-truck near Mahipalpur flyover on Tuesday morning.

Constable Pawan first chased on foot and then stopped a taxi to pursue the accused driver, Asgar Khan. The man soon abandoned the truck and ran towards a forested area, but Pawan followed him for about two kilometres before pinning him down.

Joint CP (traffic) Alok Kumar said that the police commissioner also commended Pawan’s efforts and he would be recommended for a bravery award.

Recalling the incident, Pawan said, “I saw ASI Jitendra on the truck’s bonnet holding the windshield wipers. When the mini-truck driver braked suddenly, the ASI fell and passed out. I stood in front of the vehicle and the driver threatened to run me over if I didn’t move. When I refused, he swerved to the right and sped off towards Gurgaon.”

Pawan stopped a cab and asked the driver to chase the truck speeding on Mahipalpur flyover. “Seeing me in the cab, Khan took a turn towards the airport. He soon stopped and checked in the sideview mirror whether I had stopped the pursuit. I was trying to keep him within Delhi borders till the patrol team arrived,” said Pawan.

Khan soon took a U-turn towards Delhi Cantonment. He stopped the truck near the SSB camp, got off and tried to snatch a motorcycle from a passerby. By then, Pawan had reached there. Seeing the cop, Khan started running into a forested area. “I raised an alarm and a group of labourers working at a construction site joined the chase and helped pin down Khan. I stopped another cab and boarded it, but Khan managed to roll down the window and jump out,” Pawan said.

The labourers again caught Khan and thrashed him till Pawan reached there. A DTC bus driver passing by saw the scuffle and stopped to help. “I asked the bus driver to lock the front door and allow entry of passengers only through the rear gate. After travelling a few kilometres, I spotted my colleague Shiv Pal and asked him to board the bus to keep a watch on Khan while I informed the police post,” said Pawan. The bus driver drove to Subroto Park police post where Khan was arrested.

Police are trying to trace the truck owner and will send a team to Nuh to arrest him.
