LUCKNOW: An 18-year-old girl who had TB and puss collected inside and on her lungs was operated upon at King George's Medical University (KGMU) through endoscopy, making it the first such case in UP.
The patient, from Lakhimpur Kheri, was diagnosed with pleural empyema. Doctors in the surgery department claimed that they used VATS (video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery) method perhaps for the first time in the state. The patient was discharged on Tuesday.
"We have undertaken VATS in trauma patients and for lung surgery, but this was the first time in a TB patient, perhaps in the whole of UP since no other centre is performing lung surgery as of now," said Prof Suresh Kumar, who led the team for the four-hour surgery.
The method was said to be better for the patient, who would undergo lesser pain, lesser blood loss and take fewer days of hospitalisation.
