Man charged after allegedly shaking baby, causing brain damage

A four-week-old baby will most likely suffer permanent brain damage after she was allegedly shaken by a man at a home in Sydney's south-west last week.

The 25-year-old man will face Parramatta Local Court on Wednesday, charged with recklessly inflicting grievous bodily harm.

An investigation into the baby's injuries was launched by detectives from the State Crime Command’s Child Abuse and Sex Crimes Squad after she was brought to Liverpool Hospital suffering from seizures last Thursday.

It is understood the baby's mother had been in the shower, before she returned to find the baby suffering seizures.

Police will allege the baby had been assaulted by the man, causing serious brain, neck, and rib injuries.

Following inquiries, detectives arrested the man at Parramatta police station on Thursday. He was refused bail and is due to appear at Parramatta Local Court today.

The baby was transferred to The Children’s Hospital at Westmead, where she remains in a critical but stable condition.
