Days being dedicated to human beings or inanimate objects are not rare, but trust West Bengal government to do that for a sweet. November 14 has been chosen as ‘Rosogolla Day’ to commemorate the first anniversary since the sweet received Geographical Indication (GI) tag as ‘Bengal’s Rosogolla’.

The sweet is a favourite among the resident of West Bengal and can be made at home. It is made of chhana, which is a variety of cheese made by adding citric acid  in milk and curdling it. Splitting of milk in Bengal was considered a taboo and it is believed that the origin of the sweet can be traced back to the Portuguese. It was when they formed strong ties with Bengal, by settling in provinces that the taboo was lifted.
