KOLKATA: A father-son duo questioned for vandalism at the Peerless Hospital emergency ward on Monday morning was released at night by the Panchasayer police after they agreed to tender an apology and sign an undertaking that they would not repeat such an act.

The two were part of a mob that barged into the emergency ward and broke computers and furniture as well as destroyed files of several critical patients around 11am on Monday after they learnt about the death of a family member, 82-year-old Radharani Debnath, who was admitted to the hospital with septicaemia. “The two tendered a written apology and volunteered to compensate for the losses. We did not push for legal action,” said Sudpto Mitra, chief executive officer at Peerless Hospital.

Police said the family paid the dues, a little more than Rs 23,000, and took away Debnath’s body. They had already paid Rs 20,000 in advance.

After the rampage, the police took three persons for questioning, two of them Debnath’s son-in-law and grandson. The third person was let go shortly after. But the other two were released around 10pm, after they tendered an apology and signed an undetaking that such an offence would not be repeated. “We have completed the preliminary inquiries. No official complaint from The Peerless Hospital authorities has reached us,” said an officer.

The family called it “a bad experience they wanted to put behind them”. “We were victims of the circumstances. We do not wish to play the blame game. Most of the immediate family members were not at the emergency ward when the actual vandalism took place. But we have no complaint and we all want to forget the episode. We were handed Radharani’s body late at night after which we completed her last rites,” said Santosh Debnath, a family member.

A doctor on duty said her son-in-law and daughter brought Debnath to the emergency ward on Sunday evening. “She had septicaemia from a liver infection. We began administering antibiotics but she suffered a cardiac arrest around 5am on Monday. We informed the family about the death as soon as we could contact them but got angry at the very news of her passing away,” he said.
