'India building three specialised labs to assess nuclear radiation damage'

Scientists at INMAS are developing three new specialised laboratories which they say could boost India's nuclear preparedness and help save thousands of lives in case of an atomic war or a nuclear disaster.

Ideally, they should be connected with similar labs globally to help each other as a single country will not be able to tackle nuclear disaster alone, said Aseem Bhatnagar, at the & Allied Sciences (INMAS) here.

As part of the emergency preparedness for nuclear disasters, the Agency (IAEA) and the World Organization (WHO) have made it mandatory for every country to develop laboratories, he said.

According to experts, labs alone can assess the severity of the damage caused by during nuclear disasters in any part of the world. This test is considered universally valid.

The mandatory test at the will ascertain the quantum of the exposure a person has suffered and also the possibility of their survival, they said.

"During radioactive accidents, thousands of patients may be rushed to hospitals. The blood of such patients will have damaged components in proportion to the received that this test assess," A K Singh, of Life Sciences at the DRDO, told

"Biodosimetry labs employ a test called Dicentric Chromosomal test. Laborious work is needed for three to four days and only then one can report on the severity of the damage," he added.

While the network of such labs is already strong in European countries and the US, which realised its importance after the 2001 terrorist attack on in New York, has so far, lagged behind, noted N K Chaudhary, a at INMAS.

Since the first such lab was set up in 1988 at the in Mumbai, could add just three more in the years that followed with the last one coming up at INMAS in 2016, said.

The two remaining labs were constructed at the for Atomic Research in Kalpakkam and a private hospital in Chennai, both in Tamil Nadu, he said.

INMAS is now working overtime to add three more of such laboratories in civil domain, including Memorial Hospital, Bhopal, K S Hegde Medical Academy, Mangalore and the Maulana Azad Medical College,

Experts believe another reason to expand the network is the limitations of a lab to handle only six to seven samples at a given point of time.

To effectively deal with a crises situation, when the sample size will increase manifold, more labs are needed, they said.

Stressing that general hospitals in generally do not possess the training and speciality to handle nuclear radiation cases, Bhatnagar said the country needed a network of at least 30 Biodosimetry labs.

"Currently not even India's apex institution -- All (AIIMS) -- can understand the nature of problems of a person having affected by radiation," he said.

Noting that the speed of setting up of such laboratories has been extremely slow in India, Bhatnagar said the cost of establishing basic Biodosimetry is just 10 lakh rupees while the more sophisticated ones may cost about five crore rupees.

While most of Western nations such as England, and have developed a wide network of such labs well connected with other regions of the world, India will need 30-40 such labs to develop a considering its population size, added.

"There are seven huge networks of Biodosimetry labs in the world mostly active in American continents. In fact also has developed 19 new such labs within a period of two years and now they are mostly focusing on honing their technology," he said.
