Known as the ‘crime cracker’, sniffer dog Daisy, died on Monday.

The seven-and-a-half-year-old female Doberman — attached with Chikkamagaluru District Armed Reserve (DAR) — was suffering from cancer for a few months.

One of the most celebrated sniffer dogs of the district, Daisy had inspected 105 crime spots during her service and helped nab the accused in eight murders, 15 house-thefts and 20 other cases.

Chikkamagaluru SP Harish Pandey said: “She is the most admired sniffer dog in our department. She was suffering from cancer and had undergone surgery. She could not visit crime scenes for the past few months. If not for the disease, she might have survived another four-five years.”

Daisy was brought from Chikkaballapura when she was 20 days old and trained. She made headlines after helping cops solve a rape-murder case of a minor girl in Koppa taluk in April this year. The Doberman was also instrumental in giving helping solve a murder case in Bale Honnur taluk in 2014.

For HC Shivakumar and Kumar, assistant head constables with DAR Chikkamagaluru, Daisy was part of their family. “It was an emotional moment. Besides her professional work, Daisy was active and would spend her free time with us. We’ve lost a colleague,” says Kumar. Cops will write to the department to honour the services of Daisy.

Chikkamagaluru district police paid their last respects and carried out a guard of honour by firing three rounds in the air as a mark of respect for the ‘canine cop’.
