A 48-year-old traffic policeman was mowed down by a truck in south-west Delhi’s Delhi Cantonment on Tuesday morning. The accused driver has been arrested, the police said.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (South-West) Devender Arya said Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Jitender Singh belonged to Uttar Pradesh.
He is survived by his wife, two daughters and a son, the police said.
The 23-year-old accused, identified as Ashfaq from Mewat’s Nuh, has been arrested.
The victim and three other constables were on duty near a mazar at Sanjay T-Point to check vehicle entry around 7.30 a.m. when the incident happened.
“The ASI signalled the driver to stop because entry of vehicles after 7 a.m. is banned. The driver slowed down but increased the speed when Singh approached the truck,” Mr. Arya said.
Head injuries
The ASI clung on to the truck and was dragged for about 400 metres as the accused did not stop the vehicle, the police said. Singh then fell on the road and sustained head injuries, they said.
He was rushed to a private hospital in Vasant Kunj, where he succumbed to injuries during treatment. Meanwhile, a constable deployed along with Singh chased the accused and arrested him near Mahipalpur, the police added.
The police have registered a case under Sections 304 (punishment for culpable homicide not amounting to murder), 186 (obstructing public servant in discharge of public functions) and 353 (assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty) of the Indian Penal Code.
