Mumbai: Fire breaks out at Andheri building, two people dead

Officials said the fire broke out in Kadam Nagar at a Slum Rehabilitation Authority building. According to a local resident, the fire began on the 10th floor and spread to the 11th floor.

Two people died, including a minor, and another was injured in a level-2 fire that broke out late Tuesday evening at a 21-storey residential building in Andheri (West). According to the Mumbai fire brigade, the blaze broke out on 10th and 11th floor of the 21-storey building on Veera Desai road around 8.21 pm.

Officials said the fire broke out due to a gas cylinder blast in Kadam Chawl Slum Rehabilitation Authority building, Near Oberoi Tower, Vira Desai road, Andheri. The injured was identified as Lalkishore Sharma.

According to a local resident, the fire began in Flat no. 1001 on the 10th floor and spread to Flat no. 1101, 11th floor, covering an area around 270 square feet.

Deputy CFO Panigrahi said the fire spread to the electric wiring, electric installation, household articles, wooden furniture of the two floors and three people trapped in the bedroom of Flat 1001 were rescued safely while two were found dead in the hall of the flat on 10th floor.

A high-pressure line and a small hose line of Riser system were in place for cooling purposes and ambulance attended as part of the rescue operation.

The deceased — both male — were taken to the civic-run Dr RN Cooper Hospital.
