NRI in UAE, named in FIR at Derabassi

MOHALI: Police have booked an NRI for allegedly attempting to run over a woman in Derabassi, a charge the man has denied by claiming he was in Abu Dhabi (UAE) on the day of the incident.

According to the FIR, Satyan Verma, a resident of Derabassi, hit a woman and her 20-year-old son with a car bearing registration number PB-65-8664 at 9.15 pm on October 14 near DAV High School, Derabassi.


Police registered a case under Sections 279 (rash driving or riding on a public way), 337 (causing hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others) and 427 (mischief causing damage to the amount of 50 rupees) of the IPC at the Derabassi police station.


The NRI said he is employed with Etihad Airways, Abu Dhabi, and staying in UAE for the last 10 years. Verma said he reached Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGI) in New Delhi at 2.30 am on October 14 and got his boarding pass around 2.40 am for flight EY211 (New Delhi to Abu Dhabi) scheduled to depart at 4.45 am. The flight landed at 8.30am on October 14. Verma said that he collected his luggage and purchased some stuff from duty free shops at the airport at 9.15 am and reported for his duty. “A Derabassi family has levelled false allegations against me. I came to know about the FIR on October 24 when cops came to our home for probe,” he said. According to the NRI, he came to India to attend two important family functions on October


10. “My flight EY224 landed at New Delhi airport at 7.40pm and I reached New Delhi ISBT via Metro at 8.20pm. I reached Panchkula at 9pm on October 10,” he said.


Derabassi station house officer Mohinder Singh said, “We are investigating the case.”
