Fatorda assault: Cops begin probe after public backlash

COLVA: Stung by criticism, Fatorda police have initiated an internal inquiry into a complaint filed by Seby D’Souza, an FC Goa fan from Anjuna, alleging police brutality at the Nehru stadium in Fatorda, following an ISL match between FC Goa and Delhi Dynamos on Thursday.
Fatorda PI Navlesh Dessai, said he was awaiting medical certificates from the Goa Medical College (GMC) and sanction from the government to register the complaint.
A number of cops have come under fire for assaulting a family of three FC Goa supporters. Criticism escalated after a video recording the policemen’s actions while not in uniform went viral on Friday.
On November 8, after the ISL match at Fatorda stadium concluded, the D’Souza family was taking pictures at the stadium when the police allegedly attacked Seby, his wife Tina, and their son, Lester. In his complaint, Seby stated that Lester was subsequently dragged onto the football field where he was repeatedly assaulted with fist blows to his neck, abdomen and back until he dropped to the ground, unconscious. Seby named two police sub-inspectors, Raunak Kadam and Duttaprasad Toraskar, along with 15-20 others for assaulting his son.
Lester was admitted to a private hospital at Mapusa on Saturday morning, after he suffered seizures.
Several individuals and organisations have demanded action against the policemen responsible for the assault. While advocate Rajeev Gomes said the police department should at least initiate departmental enquiry into the actions of its personnel, the Goa unit of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has demanded a magisterial inquiry into the brutal assault at the stadium.
AAP convener Rodney Almeida, in a memorandum to the South Goa collector, said such incidents questioned public safety. “There is widespread resentment among the public against the manner of assault and the subsequent attempts by the police to cover it up. A magisterial inquiry must be conducted so that the truth emerges and action is initiated against those involved in the use of excessive force, which was not warranted,” the memorandum states.
