VADODARA/AHMEDABAD: After the violence against migrants from North India in parts of Gujarat cast a shadow on Chhath celebrations, Bihar deputy chief minister Sushil Modi said that Congress MLA Alpesh Thakor’s image will not change even if he participates in the puja celebrations.

Thakor — who came under fire for allegedly instigating attacks on migrants from Bihar and UP, after a native of Bihar was arrested for raping a 14-month old girl — made an all-out attempt to make amends as he took part in Chhath puja celebrations on the bank of the Sabarmati near the Ahmedabad cantonment.

“Nothing will happen by changing his image because of how Thakor has behaved here. Alpesh Thakor does not have the courage to come to Bihar now.” Modi said during his visit to the Statue of Unity (SoU) at Kevadia Colony, when asked if Thakor is trying to change his image by performing Chhath puja.

Thakor reacted to Modi's statement saying he is not afraid. “I will definitely go to Bihar, because a citizen of India can visit any state. Like people from Bihar come to Gujarat, similarly people from Gujarat can also visit Bihar,” said Thakor, who is also the all-India Congress committee secretary assigned to Bihar.

Thakor said that such statements during a religious event are uncalled for and the BJP should act against Modi for his offensive statements.

Thakor raised the issue of minimum wages for casual labourers from UP and Bihar and said that BJP leaders should address the issue if they are really concerned about migrants from the Hindi belt.

Earlier, Modi had said that while it is normal that locals are given first preference for jobs, but people can go anywhere and work wherever they want to. “Today Gujaratis are working in Kenya, Uganda and England. Similarly people from Bihar are in Gujarat and Maharashtra. In fact, if people from Bihar will leave Gujarat, all factories the here will shut down,” Modi added.

He assured the people of Bihar that they can come to Gujarat in any number. “Nobody can and will stop them be it Gujarat or Maharashtra,” Modi said.
