Both the National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) and the All India Students’ Association (AISA) on Monday hit out at Delhi University for “delaying” the probe into the Ankiv Baisoya “fake degree” controversy.
Tuesday will mark two months since declaration of the Delhi University Students’ Union (DUSU) election results, in which Mr. Baisoya was elected president. The Lyngdoh Committee recommendations state that re-election can only happen within two months of the election if a major office-bearer’s position falls vacant.
The AISA said in a statement, “We were quite sure that DU would use various tactics and try it’s best to delay the matter till November 12 [Tuesday]. It finally succeeded in doing so. It is now clear that the entire administration is working in collusion with the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad and the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party.”
AISA said it believed the Ankiv Baisoya case was not just a case of a fake degree but one of “bowing down of India’s top university in front of the BJP”.
“This sends a clear signal — no matter what the ABVP does, the ruling government will always save it,” said AISA Delhi president Kawalpreet Kaur.
The NSUI said it will continue to fight the battle in court and take the legal proceedings to their logical end — have Mr. Baisoya disqualified and call for fresh elections. It said the Lyngdoh Committee recommendations are only guidelines and that the “fake certificate” came to light well within the two-month period after the election.
