Use boat to bring her safely to the shore

Two fishermen saved a 45-year-old woman who tried to end her life in Vashi.

The incident took place near Vashi bridge on Sunday when Ganesh Sutar and Kundalik Mhatre from Vashi village were fishing in Vashi creek. An officer from Vashi police station said the fishermen saved her from drowning and brought her in their boat to the shore.

The police said the woman was a resident of Koparkhairane and stayed with her husband and son. The officer said the woman was highly diabetic and depressed over her health issues. The fishermen informed the woman’s son about the incident and asked him to reach the spot.

The officer said, “The fishermen alerted us after the son took her home.” The police said the woman left her home on the pretext of going to the vegetable market and went to the bridge.

The Vashi police have been writing letters since 2015 requesting the Public Works Department (PWD) to put up wired fencing on the bridge. Senior police inspector Anil Deshmukh said, “We had sent a reminder to the PWD, but there has been no reply. We got to know the proposal is being discussed but we are yet to get an official notification.”
