The hunt is on to track down gutless thieves who stole a six-week-old disabled foal from a racehorse trainer.

Nathan McPherson took to social media on Monday night to launch a desperate search for his beloved foal Holly, who was stolen from a racing stable at a Carrum Downs property on Melbourne south-eastern outskirts on Monday.

Holly is the first foal for retired racehorse Zagenza, who won $22,000 in her 11-race career.

'This is a very hard foal to miss,' Mr Pherson posted on Facebook.

'Holly is six-weeks-old and was born with contracted tendon. I've been work my ass off to get her right and when arrived home from work today someone has cut her braces off that were heavily stuck on. Best be bringing my foal back before I find the people responsible.'

The heartfelt Facebook post has since attracted 10,800 shares and 1900 reactions.

Since Holly is unable to walk, Mr McPherson has been looking after the foal night and day since she was born, sleeping in the paddock and carrying her to Zagenza for hourly feeds. 

'My brother has done everything to keep Holly alive and to get her legs strong enough for her to lead a normal happy life in the paddock with her mum,' his sister Bianca Willis posted on Facebook.

Mr McPherson went to work on Monday to help cover the mounting vet bills and returned later the same night to find Holly missing. The straps on her leg braces had been cut, he said.

'It's just unconditional love you know,' he told 9 News. 

'I didn't hear or see from her and as I started to walk through the paddock, noticed her bandages and splints and bits of pipe made up for her braces were scattered all through the paddock.'

Security cameras in the racing stable had stopped working for unknown reasons.

A search party of eight people frantically scoured the the 20 acre property but found no sign of Holly. 

Frankston Crime Investigation Unit is investigating the brazen theft of Holly.

Ms Willis pleaded for the foal's return.
