Nagpur: The special branch (SB) of city police has started preparing area-wise lists of Maoist sympathizers and members of different frontal organizations who follow the ideologies of the banned Communist Party of India (Maoist). The initiative is part of the revamped intelligence collection under the regime of city police chief BK Upadhyay and joint CP Ravindra Kadam.
The dossiers on ‘Urban Naxalites’ include details about their activities and other links, if any. The cops are now extra vigilant about the programmes and meetings which are being organized by them. Surveillance is also being done along with other security agencies to keep a tab on literature, audio-visual and any other material being sponsored or authored by the Urban Naxalites.
It’s learnt that employees of various sensitive organizations, especially those related to security and safety of the country, are also under vigilance.
Sources in the police department state that the SB is in ultra active mode under DCP Nirmala Devi S. The manner of collecting information has got a changeover with the existing style being replaced with a robust approach.
“Several meetings have been conducted by CP and joint CP during which SB personnel were briefed about their roles and responsibilities. The SB teams have been assigned several tasks which are now reviewed on a daily basis by DCP Nirmala,” said a source.
Upadhyay has carved out a ‘Special 30’ from the SB wing. Each of the 30 constables have been assigned one police station to keep daily tabs and report, if necessary, directly to the CP. The constable has to draw up a list of 10 important civilians who would discuss various problems in their localities.
Special focus is on SIM card sellers, hoteliers, cyber café owners, auto dealers, agents and brokers dealing in properties, NGOs, landlords and such people who are required to keep a data of their customers. Landlords have been asked to furnish details of their tenants at the police stations. Cyber café owners too have been asked to maintain records of customers.
“The SB sleuths are also trying to connect with various key political leaders, opinion makers and their organizations in every area. Data about the trustees and committee members of various shrines, religious places and public bodies are being prepared now,” he said.
