A day after a three-year-old girl was found brutally raped and murdered in Gurgaon, police have formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the crime and arrest the 20-year-old prime suspect. Police have also announced a reward of Rs 2 lakh for anyone who can provide information leading to his arrest.

“Commissioner of Police K K Rao has formed an SIT, headed by DCP (crime) Sumit Kumar,” said Subhash Boken, PRO of Gurgaon police, adding that the SIT will comprise two assistant commissioners of police, two inspectors from the crime branch, the SHO of the police station concerned, and two sub-inspectors.

“In addition, any person who can provide information leading to the arrest will be given Rs 2 lakh. The identity of the informer will be kept anonymous,” said Boken.

Police said the suspect, who lived in the same slum as the girl, hails from Uttar Pradesh, and teams have been sent to the state to track him.

The incident had come to light Monday morning, when the naked body of the three-year-old was discovered by some labourers.

Doctors who conducted her autopsy said that they found a “10-cm-long wooden stick” inside her private parts.

The child had been missing from home since Sunday morning. The children she was playing with claimed the accused lured her by offering a chocolate and Rs 10, said police.

On Monday, the girl’s parents had claimed that they approached police after she went missing, but were told that the case fell under the jurisdiction of another station. The SHO concerned, however, claimed the family never approached them.

A human rights group, Gharelu Kamgar Union (GKU), took note of this on Tuesday and said: “The union strongly condemns the negligence reflected at the level of the local police who failed to file a missing persons report on the evening of November 11. The union calls for strict action against the erring SHO for not filing a zero FIR and failing to dispatch a search team to trace the child.”

The GKU also called for measures such as opening of government-run creches and schools, among other facilities, in “working class shanties” to ensure safety and security of families, especially women and children.

“The union has decided to gherao the deputy commissioner office if timely action against the erring SHO is not taken. The union shall also be writing to the DC to take appropriate measure to enhance safety of women and children in Gurgaon’s slums,” added the statement.
