DHARMAPURI: The parents of the rape victim who died in the Dharmapuri government medical college hospital on November 10 agreed to accept the girl's body after they were assured by police officials on Monday that they would get justice.

A team of three doctors performed the postmortem and handed over the body to the family around 6.30 pm.

Political parties, including the Pattali Makkal Katchi, the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi and the Tamil Nadu Desiya Malai Makkal Katchi, had pressured the family not to believe the assurances given by police, but the girl's mother A Malar said she wanted to give her daughter a decent burial instead of letting the body decompose in the mortuary.

Meanwhile, the second man accused in the rape case P Ramesh, 22, surrendered before the JM2 of the Salem district court.

The Dharmapuri police took him into custody. On Sunday S Sathish, the other accused, was arrested.

The 17-year-old girl from Sitling, a tribal hamlet near Harur in Dharmapuri district, was raped allegedly by P Ramesh, 22 and S Sathish, 22, also from the same village, on November 5.

The girl's parents lodged a complaint with the Kottapatty police the same night based on the girl's statement.
