Students argue, but learn life lessons

The idea of fun while learning came true at the Times School Parliament, 2018 — a platform that taught different lessons to all.
While for some young minds it was fun, for some it was an eye-opener. “It was definitely a fun experience but the most important lesson I learnt was how one should not always be quiet and calm. Being a little aggressive while debating is needed,” said Sejal Jain, a Std XII student of Tuli Public School.
Learning from others’ opinions too is effective, felt Pinky Shukla, who participated in TSP for the first time. “Rather than focusing on what we think, it is also important to consider and understand the perspective of others. For me, this was the biggest life lesson learnt here,” said Shukla, a Std IX student of Lal Bahadur Shastri High School.
Like politicians, students too had a tough time keeping calm when the atmosphere got heated up during the debate. Calling it the most memorable experience ever, Std X student Anoosh Ali Naqvi of Bishop Cotton School said, “When there are a lot of different perspectives on one topic, the discussions get aggressive. How to keep cool at such times and expressing one’s perspective was a real challenge.”
For some, the debate turned out to be a reality check of their aptitude. “I used to think that I am very good at public speaking, but here I realized that there are many better speakers. I got a chance to learn a lot from them,” said Aryan Bhutda, a Std X student of Central India Public School.
The debate also presented a much-needed opportunity of developing one’s personality. “While speaking here in front of a large audience, I got a chance to develop my oratory skills,” said Anwita Metre, a Std X student of Sandipani School.
For those who would perceive politics as boring, TSP bust all myths. “I have realized that politics can be fun and useful. I strongly felt that during such debates, we should not underestimate or put others down in order to be heard. At the same time, it is important to put forth our voice and views firmly,” said Ayush Ganatra, a Std X student of Central India Public School.
