A juvenile justice officer accused of bashing a teenage detainee has been charged with assault.

The 17-year-old detainee was allegedly assaulted by the 54-year-old officer at the Frank Baxter Juvenile Justice Centre at Kariong, in New South Wales' Central Coast, on Saturday.

Officers from Brisbane Water Police District attended the scene on Monday after being notified of the detainee's facial injuries.

A New South Wales Police spokesperson told Daily Mail Australia the teenager was treated on the scene and not hospitalised.
