Mercedes-AMG GT “Club Sport” Looks Ready To Devour Your Favorite Track

Following countless reports on the Mercedes-AMG GT R Black Series and Club Sport models, a test car was spotted wearing a much more aggressive aero kit during some high-speed testing on the Nurburgring.

Mercedes has been playing a lot of hide-and-seek with their AMG GT test cars the past few months but this one appears to feature the complete bodywork of what is believed to become the more focused ‘Club Sport’ version of the GT R.

The fully camouflaged test car features a number of extra winglets on the front bumper and fenders, as well as a fixed rear wing and a new exhaust setup, featuring a pair of twin pipes sitting on either side of the diffuser. Our spies also spotted a green test car that featured louvers on its front fenders, just like the current Porsche 911 GT3 RS.

The German carmaker has confirmed both the GT R Black Series and the GT R Club Sport during the last few months, although the latter could use a different suffix, once it arrives in the market. AMG’s boss Tobias Moers confirmed earlier in the year that they work on a more track-focused GT R model to bridge the gap between the normal GT R and the 2020 Black Series.

“It’ll be a bit more race track-oriented. It’s lightened a little bit, but it’s more of a track day version for fun on circuits”, said Moers back in April.

The more track-focused version of the GT R will be subjected to a light diet, trimming some of the 3,650lbs (1,655kg) of the current flagship AMG GT. That will include a stripped interior and more carbon fiber in the right places.

The twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8 will most likely gain a few horses as well; the standard AMG GT R makes 577hp, so expect around 600hp for the ‘Club Sport’.
