Spider-Man creator, comic book titan Stan Lee dies

Stan Lee, the man who brought Spider-Man, Iron Man, the Hulk and a host of other Marvel Comics superheroes to life, has died.

He reportedly passed away Monday at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles.

He was 95.

As a writer and editor, Lee was key to the development of Marvel into a comic book giant in the 1960s.

Beyond his comic book genius, many of his mythic figures -- like X-Men and Iron Man -- also saw enormous success at the movie box office, generating hundreds of millions of dollars.

But with the financial success, came disputes.

In 2002 Lee sued Marvel for his 10 percent share in profits from "Spider-Man" and received a $10 million settlement.

Among his many accolades, Lee received the National Medal of Arts in 2008, the highest government award for creative artists.

Lee was widely credited with adding a new layer of complexity and humanity to superheroes.

They had relatable worries about love and money, and endured tragic flaws or feelings of insecurity.

Lee, the son of Jewish immigrants from Romania, once said that he didn't have hundreds of millions of dollars but that he was happy enough to get a nice pay check and be treated well.
