Former RSS chief Subhash Velingkar enters active politics

Former chief of Goa Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) Subhash Velingkar on Sunday announced his political entry through a regional outfit, Goa Suraksha Manch (GSM).

Addressing a press press conference here, Mr. Velingkar said, “I have decided to enter active politics.”

He said that the decision of whether he will contest elections will be taken at an appropriate time. But for the moment, he would accept whatever responsibility that will be given to him by the GSM.

Mr. Velingkar had a fall out with the Goa BJP over the latter’s failure to stick to its pre-election promise in 2012 to stop government grants to Diocese primary schools in English medium and to continue grants only to primary schools with regional languages as medium of instruction. He has been the convener of Bharatiya Bhasha Suraksha Manch, an umbrella organisation initially dominated by RSS leaders, along with regional language lovers to champion the cause of regional languages as medium of instruction at primary level in the State.

Ahead of the 2017 elections, Mr. Velingkar developed major differences with BJP, which eventually resulted in his removal from the post as Goa RSS Chief and a split in RSS in Goa. He floated GSM, which contested 2017 assembly elections in alliance with Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party and Shiv Sena, but failed to win seats.
