Herald House: AJL moves HC against govt’s vacate order
TNN | Nov 13, 2018, 03:03 ISTNEW DELHI: Associated Journals Limited (AJL), publisher of the newspaper “National Herald”, approached the Delhi high court on Monday against a government order to vacate Herald House, its premises for five decades.
The publisher has challenged the Centre’s order ending its 56-year-old lease and asking it to vacate the premises on Bahadurshah Zafar Marg.
The plea challenging the October 30 order of the urban development ministry asking it to vacate the premises by November 15 is scheduled to come up for hearing on Tuesday before Justice Sunil Gaur. It has alleged the land and development office order was “illegal, unconstitutional, arbitrary, tainted with mala fide (sic) and without authority and jurisdiction”.
The petition, filed through advocate Sunil Fernandes, states that the Centre has issued a warning promising punitive measures if the Herald House premises is not vacated.
As per the plea, one of the grounds mentioned in the L&DO order is that no press has been functioning on the premises for at least a decade and is being used only for commercial purposes, in violation of the lease deed. The allegation has been refuted by AJL.
