Min: It is a time for introspection
TNN | Updated: Nov 12, 2018, 23:59 ISTT’puram: As citizens are debating over the SC order allowing entry women of all ages to Sabarimala, the anniversary celebrations of Temple Entry Proclamation garnered much attention.
The four-day celebrations, held by the state government to commemorate the 82nd anniversary of Temple Entry Proclamation was marked by huge participation of public.
Minister Kadakampally Surendran inaugurated the valedictory function of the celebration on Monday. “We must introspect whether we are moving forward or backward,” the minister said.
“Our history of renaissance led us from a mental asylum to God’s Own Country. It is time to ponder on whether we are following the same path shown by our renaissance leaders. Now, attempts are being made to destroy our Constitution,” Surendran added.
“It is the responsibility of the government to implement the SC order on Sabarimala. Some are trying to use the situation for their own vested interests. Sabarimala is an abode of secularism. Even when other temples were closed for lower castes till 1936, Sabarimala always kept its doors open for all irrespective of their religion or caste. The society must stay alert on attempts to use it for petty political gains,” the minister said.
A discussion on ‘Kerala renaissance and path of women struggles’ was held earlier on the day. “No verdict was implemented without a resistance movement. Achippudava Samaram, Mookkuthi Agitation and Maarumarakkal Samaram are all examples,” said journalist M S Sreekala who participated in the discussion. tnn
