MANGALURU: Students of SDM Pre University College, Ujire, have taken the concept of creating wealth out of waste quite literally and designed a four-wheeled motorcycle out of scrapped items.
The students said most of the parts were bought from scrap dealers in Mangaluru and other parts of Dakshina Kannada to build the vehicle.
Afeez, Ifaaz, Marwa, Zameer and Harsha have built the motorcycle in just in three months and under Rs 10,000. They were mentored by their lecturers Lakshmeesh, Rajesh and Gurudeep.
Afeez, a I PU Science (PCMS) student said they decided to build the motorcycle completely from scrapped materials after they read in an article that India had been exporting scrap at throwaway prices. "Those countries come up with innovations and sell those products in India at much higher rates. This motorcycle is a small indicator to show how scrap could be utilised," he said.
The team members began collecting scrap from dealers in Bunder, Somanthadka and Ujire among other places since August. However, not all of these parts were functional. Undeterred, the students fixed those parts on their own, including the crucial engine - a CT 100 motorcycle engine - on their own watching videos on Youtube.
The motorcycle gives a mileage of 40 kmpl and also has a 12 watt battery. The students say their vehicle is beneficial in various sectors, including farming, as there is enough space to carry vegetables and crops from the field to the house or the storage facility. The presence of four wheels also makes it an appropriate vehicle for the differently abled, they said, adding they intend to further develop this for a wide ranging applications.
"We want to include reverse gear and butterfly steering among several other aspects. We are working on it and are confident of completing it successfully," Afeez said.
