Tom Hiddleston as Loki in Thor: Ragnarok.
A while ago, it was reported that Tom Hiddleston may star in a TV series based on his Marvel character Loki. Now, Disney has confirmed that a project to that effect is in development at Disney+, the entertainment company’s upcoming streaming service.
Hiddleston first starred as Loki in 2011 film Thor. He was the main villain in 2012’s superhero film The Avengers. He was last seen in the role in Avengers: Infinity War earlier this year, in which Loki appeared to die by the hands of Thanos, the Mad Titan.
But Loki has “died” before, only to appear hale and hearty in the next scene or movie. It could also be that he would be revived in Avengers 4 somehow (through time-travel, for instance). It is not known yet when and where the show will take place. Loki, as a Jotunheim native and an Asgardian, has lived for centuries and undoubtedly, he had lots of adventures before he was introduced to us in Thor. The show could cover those adventures as well.
Loki is easily one of the best villains in the MCU. He is slimy but also fluctuates between being good and bad. He is also a sympathetic villain since his adopted father Odin lied to him about his origins. When the realisation comes that his whole life has been a big lie, he has reasons, valid or not, to hate not just Odin and Asgardians but the universe. This explains his villainy. Over the course of the last two movies, though, Loki has become more of a good guy, who sacrificed himself in Infinity War so Thor, a brother he used to hate, could escape.
A Disney press release quoted by Forbes reads, “Disney+ is…assembling a live-action series centered around a fan-favorite character from the Marvel Cinematic Universe. [Bob] Iger today confirmed that Marvel Studios is developing a series based on Loki, the god of mischief, to star Tom Hiddleston.”
