TRICHY: The Srirangam all-woman police on Sunday registered a case against a lady doctor in a private hospital here for performing medical termination of pregnancy (MTP) on a woman without the consent of the latter’s husband.
The police registered the case against Dr Hemamalini following a direction of the judicial magistrate court III here. The court issued the direction after the woman’s husband, S Udhayakumar of Mannargudi in Tiruvarur district, moved it.

Udhayakumar, 35, alleged that the doctor carried out the MTP on his wife, Mahalakshmi, on November 26, 2017 without his consent.

However, the doctor defended herself stating that since the foetus had not been alive, she had conducted the procedure with the consent of the woman.

Inspector of police P S Chithra said the woman had approached the doctor for the procedure after she had separated from her husband though they had not been divorced.

The complainant alleged that the doctor had verbally abused him when he questioned her about the issue.

Though the police registered a case against Hemamalini, they decided to seek the opinion of the Tamil Nadu Medical Council to check if there was any negligence on the part of the doctor.
