PUNE: The civic body is planning to stake claim on additional water, citing the increase in the city’s population over the years.

“The process of compiling the data for population and other details for water consumption is under way. We shall have to give these details to the Maharashtra Water Resources Regulatory Authority (MWRRA) by mid-December. Thereafter, the decision on the additional quota will be taken,” V G Kulkarni, the head of the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC)’s water department, told TOI on Monday.

Currently, 11.5 TMC water is allotted to the city per year. A demand for at least 15 TMC water will be made before the MWRA, which had in 2017 issued a notice to the PMC for using excess water per capita. A hearing on it was conducted in Mumbai on Monday.

In 2017, the irrigation department had asked the PMC to avail 8.19 TMC water annually. The decision on allotment was done based on the population figures the PMC had submitted in an affidavit, which was 39.18 lakh. The state government had given green signal to the PMC to use 11.5 TMC water.

A senior official of the PMC said, “During the past two decades, the population of the city has gone up drastically. The boom in IT industry and other job opportunities have led to migration from other parts of the country to the city. Though the population has gone up, the city’s water quota has remained the same, causing disparity in water distribution.”

The city is facing reduction in the water supply for almost a month. The decision to reduce the supply of water from 1,350 MLD to 1,150 MLD per day was taken in October.

The politicians claimed that the volume of water was reduced to make sure that the existing quota lasted till next monsoon. The move drew flak from residents, as adequate water was available in the four dams around the city. Thereafter, the decision to demand more water was taken.

According to the PMC officials, the city’s need of water is likely to increase because of recent developments, including the merger of 11 villages in the PMC limits.

Saurabh Rao, the Pune municipal commissioner, had said in a general body meeting held in October that the PMC would seek more water citing the reason of increased population. The estimate would be based on the data of Aadhar card and voters’ registration.
