A five-day-old baby girl was abandoned on the doorstep of a homestead in an Eastern Cape village, provincial police said on Monday.

A resident of the homestead in Thuthura Village, Centane, found the baby on the doorstep around 21:00 on Thursday, Captain Jackson Manatha said.

It was not clear how long she had been lying there for.

"No one was seen leaving the baby at the door step. No one knows the baby," he said.

Manatha said the baby was taken to a clinic and later to the Department of Social Development.
