MUMBAI: With festivities over, the BMC is all set to choke Mumbai's roads some more as it will take up repair works for 150 roads. Work is already underway on 200 roads.
Officials from the roads department said that they have been finding it difficult to get traffic police permissions to undertake road works because of Metro construction. "Metro works are underway on all major corridors and therefore, getting permissions for road repairs on the same stretch has become difficult. Hence, we are taking up works phase-wise," said an official from the roads department.
Road works are in several areas of the city like SV Road, KB Patil Road near Mumbai University in Fort and at Tardeo.
At a recent meeting with utility agencies, which dig up roads to lay various cables, the BMC has asked them to detect a mechanism to easily detect their existing network. "This would help to ensure that the surface in not disturbed repeatedly," said a senior BMC official. Out of the total 1,941km of road length in Mumbai, around 500km is dug up to lay utility lines. In the recent times, the BMC has been informing utility agencies of their plans to dig up roads three months in advance so that they can synchronize their cable laying works.
