Chennai:
Munaf Patel who was part of the 2011 World Cup winning Indian cricket team announced his retirement from all forms of cricket on Friday. The 35-year-old made his international debut in March 2006 against England in Mohali. Since then he has played 13 Tests, 70 ODIs and 3 T20Is for India with 125 international wickets to his credit.
"There is no regret; after all the cricketers I played with have retired," the pacer said while addressing the media. "Only Dhoni is left! So, there is no sadness as such. Everyone's time is up; I would have been sad had others been playing and I had quit."
"There is no special reason, age is not on my side, fitness is not the same. Youngsters are there waiting for chance and it doesn't look nice if I keep hanging on. The main thing is there is no motivation left. I was part of (the) World Cup winning team in 2011; there can't be a greater high than that," he further added.
Hailing from Ikhar in Gujarat Munaf Patel represented Mumbai, Maharashtra, Baroda and Gujarat in domestic cricket. He has played for the Mumbai Indians, Rajasthan Royals and the Gujarat Lions in the IPL.
He played his last game against England in Cardiff a few months after the successful World Cup campaign on 3rd September 2011.
He hasn't played a single match in the blues since then. Not only that, he also hasn't played a first-class match since 2016. He also has been in and out of various IPL franchises.
The pacer would be seen in the upcoming T10 league in Dubai. He says that he would like to remain with the game as coach. "I still can't believe I am quitting cricket as I don't know anything else. I understand only cricket," he said.
