The Coimbatore Consumer Cause, a consumer organisation, has appealed to the Highways Department to remove the rubber and plastic speed breakers placed against Indian Roads Congress (IRC) norms in several parts of the city.
Secretary of the consumer organisation K. Kathirmathiyon said these speed breakers are provided on main roads and lanes in residential areas.
For instance, there is one opposite the Tamil Nadu Agriculture University entrance. The university has an underpass to help students go from campus to another across the road. According to the IRC norms, speed breakers are formed by providing a rounded hump of 3.7 metres width and 0.10 metres height so that vehicles slow down in that area. These should be painted in black and white bands with luminous paint.
A cautionary sign should be placed 40 metres ahead of the speed breakers.
Statistics of the Union Government shows that speed breakers lead to 30 crashes a day across the country.
Speed breakers are normally for the minor roads. But in many parts of the city, such as RS Puram and Ramnagar, there are speed breakers on the main and minor roads, violating the norms.
He appealed to the Department to ensure that speed breakers are placed only according to rules and corrective steps taken for those in violation of the norms.
