He was particularly annoyed at how the issue of air pollution would be raised every year — and soon get buried under other “distracting” events.

Delhi-based rapper Raoul Kerr began penning a song on Delhi’s pollution just after Diwali 2016. He added another verse after the next Diwali, and finally completed it after this year’s festival. Not that writing the song was such a cumbersome effort; the 25-year-old said he was simply observing a pattern.

He was particularly annoyed at how the issue of air pollution would be raised every year — and soon get buried under other “distracting” events.

“I think we should have become serious after the odd-even trial in 2016, but then I realised that demonetisation happened the same year. I understand people got really distracted because it was a matter of their money, but I think now it’s time to fight outright for clean air. You can call this a protest song but it’s beyond that,” Kerr said.

Kerr, who collaborates with several bands, released the song, Exhale, this week. The three-minute song, shot across the city, talks about the apathy among people when it comes to addressing pollution. Of all the factors that contribute to Delhi’s toxic air, Kerr believes crackers are the easiest to tackle.
