Thiruvananthapuram: In a statement issued on Thursday, public works department (PWD) minister G Sudhakaran said sanction has been given for construction of high roof over the road from west gate of Sree Padmanabha Swamy temple to Utsava Madom.
The 78m-long road will get a steel structure with tiles over it, at a height of 7.5 metre .

The project will be executed by Kerala Nirmiti Kendra using the fund from Swadeshi Darshan scheme of the state government. The estimated cost is Rs 2 crore.

Recently, the temple executive officer requested the PWD to show green flag for the project. Following this, minister convened a meeting of officials concerned and gave the nod.

R Sanil Kumar, temple executive engineer, said the project envisaged to give a temporary shelter to devotees when it rains. “There are no enough shelters for devotees outside the temple. The proposed long roof will be installed at par with the height of the buildings on either sides of the road from west gate to Utsava Madom,” he said.

In addition to this, the temple authorities have begun renovation of roads around it. Granite stones procured from Sadarahalli in Karnataka are being used for the purpose. Renovation of outer ring road too has been planned on west gate –Vazhapally – Vettimurichakota-Rajadhani route. Street lights resembling old lamps used during the royal era will be installed.
