Opposition seeks CBI probe

more-in

Leader of the Opposition Ramesh Chennithala on Sunday demanded a CBI probe into the death of a youth in Neyyattinkara involving a Deputy Superintendent of Police in view of the attempts of the police and the CPI(M) district leadership to sabotage investigations.

In a statement here, Mr. Chennithala said the police had failed to arrest the main accused, DySP Harikumar, seven days after the crime had taken place.

He said investigations would reach nowhere if the police were to do the job against their own colleague.

He recalled the Sreejith murder case in which the police who were responsible for his custody death were now at large.

The police did not even file a case against the then Aluva SP who was one of the accused. The Neyyattinkara case would meet a similar fate, he said.

He alleged that the police official was able to dodge the investigators only because of the support given by the local CPI(M) leadership. He also expressed his reservations at the news reports about witnesses being threatened.
