Cardiff climbs out of relegation zone, courtesy Bamba’s last-gasp goal

Leicester City rode a wave of emotion on Saturday but was unable to break the deadlock against Burnley in its first home match since owner Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha was killed in a helicopter crash outside the King Power Stadium.

A special tribute video was shown on big screens before kick-off.

The first half of the match itself was relatively uneventful but the atmosphere built as the second half wore on, with fans desperate to honour Vichai with a victory.

Leicester produced wave upon wave of attacks but few clear-cut chances and had to settle for a 0-0 draw on a day when the result was secondary.

Earlier Cardiff climbed out of the Premier League relegation zone as Sol Bamba’s last-gasp goal clinched a 2-1 win over 10-man Brighton.

Neil Warnock’s side marked their manager’s 100th game in charge of the Welsh club with only their second league victory this season.

Lewis Dunk put Brighton in front in the sixth minute at the Cardiff City Stadium when he headed home from Solly March’s free-kick.

But Callum Paterson headed Cardiff’s 28th-minute equaliser before the visitors had Dale Stephens sent off for a lunging foul on Greg Cunningham six minutes later. Cardiff pressed for a winner which finally arrived when Bamba slotted home in the last minute.

Quickfire hat-trick

Alassane Plea scored a quickfire hat-trick for Borussia Monchengladbach in a 3-1 win at Werder Bremen.

Plea ran riot in Bremen, taking just 13 minutes to claim his hat-trick as the hosts suffered their third straight league defeat to drop further back in the title race to sit seventh.

The $26 million signing from French side Nice beat Bremen striker Martin Harnik and playmaker Davy Klaassen to flick his shot into the bottom left hand corner on 39 minutes for his first goal.

His second followed when he fired through the legs of Bremen midfielder Maximilian Eggestein and goalkeeper Jiri Pavlenka on 48 minutes.

Plea wrapped up his hat-trick just four minutes later when a precise pass from left-back Oscar Wendt picked him out in the area and he fired home his eighth league goal of the season from close range.
