Israeli special forces soldiers have this evening killed a Hamas commander after launching a bid to kidnap him which resulted in a gun battle that caused casualties on both sides, according to reports.

Palestinian officials have said that Israeli security forces killed a commander from the Hamas Islamist group in the Gaza Strip today - now named as Nourreddin Mohamed Salama Barake.

Initial reports on Twitter suggested that Israeli special forces attempted to kidnap the commander after infiltrating the Strip wearing women's clothing.

Israeli military has confirmed 'an exchange of fire' took place this evening, while the The Palestinian Health Ministry has said a total seven militants were killed by Israeli fire in Gaza fighting. The Army later confirmed one soldier was killed and one critically injured.

In a statement, Hamas' armed wing, the Qassam Brigades, said Israeli undercover forces in a civilian vehicle infiltrated two miles into Gaza and fatally shot one of its commanders.

It said militants discovered the car and chased it down, prompting Israeli airstrikes that killed 'a number of people.'

Palestinian officials earlier said a group of Hamas men were fired at from a passing car. Local witnesses also said Israeli planes fired over 20 missiles into open areas in the area where the incident took place.

The Israeli military said in a brief statement that: 'During IDF (Israel Defense Forces) operational activity in the Gaza Strip, an exchange of fire evolved.'

The Palestinian Health Ministry has said that five militants have been killed by Israeli fire in Gaza fighting.

Palestinian security sources said the clash occurred east of Khan Younis in the southern Gaza Strip.

Sunday's exchange of fire came as Israel and Gaza's Hamas rulers appeared to be making progress toward an unofficial cease-fire.

Israel last week allowed Qatar to deliver $15million to Hamas, while Hamas scaled back its weekly demonstration along the Israeli border.

It was not immediately clear what sparked the fighting. Shortly after the exchange of fire, air raid sirens sounded in southern Israel, indicating rocket fire from Gaza.

Israeli military spokesman Jonathan Conricus said all Israeli soldiers involved had returned to Israel.

'IDF operated in the Gaza Strip, exchange of gunfire ensued,' he wrote on Twitter, referring to the Israel Defence Forces.

'All IDF soldiers back in Israel. Several alarms have sounded in southern Israel.'

A Hamas spokesman denounced a 'cowardly Israeli attack.'

A spokesman for Israel's Airport's Authority says some flight landings and departures have been changed at the country's international airport amid a new spasm of violence between Israel and Hamas in Gaza.

Ofer Lefler said Sunday that the runway changes were made after the fighting began. He says they would not affect the flight schedule.

Prime Minister of Israel Benjamin Netanyahu decided to cut short a trip to Paris this evening and return home, his office said, after a clash erupted in the Gaza Strip between Palestinian militants and soldiers.

'In view of the security incidents in the south, the prime minister has decided to cut short his visit to Paris and to return home tonight to Israel,' a statement said.

Netanyahu was in Paris as part of World War I commemorations.

Earlier today, Netanyahu had defended his decision to allow the transfer of the Qatari money, rejecting criticism that the move had strengthened the Islamic militant group.

Netanyahu told reporters that it was 'the right step' at the moment and that he was committed to restoring quiet along the Israel-Gaza frontier and preventing a humanitarian crisis in the coastal Palestinian territory.

'Every action, without exception, has a price,' he said. 'If you can't handle the price you cannot lead. And I can handle the price.'

Israeli critics, including members of Netanyahu's hard-line coalition, accused him of capitulating to violence and of granting relief to the embattled Hamas group.

The internationally backed Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, whose forces lost control of Gaza to Hamas in 2007, angrily accused the U.S. and Israel of being involved in a 'conspiracy' to permanently sever Gaza from the West Bank. He promised to take unspecified measures against his Hamas rivals in the coming days.

Hamas leaders in Gaza have described the arrival of the $15 million, delivered last week in three suitcases by a Qatari diplomat, as their first major gain of more than seven months of weekly protests along the perimeter fence.

Hamas has been leading the protests since March 30 in a bid to ease a crippling Israeli-Egyptian blockade that was imposed in 2007 in order to weaken the militant group. The blockade has led to over 50 percent unemployment and chronic power outages, and prevents most Gazans from being able to leave the tiny territory.

Israel says it is defending its border against militant infiltrations, but its army has come under international criticism because of the large number of unarmed protesters who have been shot.

Just last month Palestinian protesters launched flaming kites and incendiary balloons towards Israel in a fresh outbreak of violence in Gaza which left 130 people injured.

Thousands of Palestinians massed along the border on Friday, October 19 in a protest co-ordinated by Hamas which saw some demonstrators breach the perimeter fence.
